Personal watercraft, also known as PWCs, are an extremely fun way to get in some water recreation time. While these “aquatic motorcycles” are certainly great for solo riding, plenty of people opt for models that have modular seating that allows for two, three, or even four riders at a time. If you’re riding your personal watercraft with a passenger, here’s what you need to keep in mind.

Benefits

Riding a PWC with passengers can just be a lot more fun than riding on your own. Also, if you’re out in the middle of the lake and something happens, you’ve got one or more people who might be able to help you get out of a jam. A personal watercraft ride is also a great way to bond with friends and family.

Know Your Limits

You should understand the limits of your personal watercraft as well as your own riding abilities before you bring one or more passengers on board. Not every personal watercraft can hold multiple people; some models may be designed only for two riders, or a certain amount of weight, so make sure you’re staying under that limit. If you’re somewhat new to riding a PWC, it may be best to ride solo for a while until you’ve built up enough skill and confidence to add another person.

Educate Your Passenger

Anyone who rides your PWC with you should be responsible for their own safety as well. They should wear a personal flotation device (PFD, also known as a life jacket) at all times on the water. Passengers should also keep a hold on either the driver’s waist or the grab bars on the PWC while the watercraft is in motion. Establish some communication signals that you and your passenger can use while you’re riding if they want to stop or slow down.
