Here in the Midwest, we have our fair share of strange and sudden weather events, from spring thunderstorms to summer tornadoes to fall and winter snowstorms. It’s important if you ride a motorcycle that you are prepared to handle inclement weather in any of its forms. Heavy precipitation, cold temperatures, and high winds all pose a significant threat to you when you’re riding a motorcycle, so here are some strategies to use when the weather is less than ideal.

Determine If It’s Safe

There may be certain types of inclement weather that actually make it far too dangerous for you to ride your motorcycle. You should be able to determine, based on the severity of the weather, your type of bike, and your experience level, whether you can ride safely or not on a given day. If you’re a new rider, you may want to avoid snowy conditions until you have more experience. Riding on ice is not recommended for anyone, though.

Don’t Go Alone

Riding motorcycles with a friend in bad weather can be better than being by yourself. If one of your bikes breaks down, you’ll have someone who can join you in fixing it or seeking help. And if someone becomes injured, having someone else there is just safer in general.

Dress Appropriately

You’ll want to dress in layers when the temperatures are cold and the weather is wet. Wear insulating fabrics like wool or polyester close to your skin, which can also wick away moisture. Thick fleece or wool or a padded riding jacket or suit makes a good outer layer. Don’t forget to wear a hat underneath your helmet, a scarf that’s tucked into your jacket, insulated gloves, and thick socks with your boots.
